Project:Textus
Client: ARUP/MEPC
Date: 2007
Site specific projected installation a collaboration
with Arup engineers and artist Peter Coates and sited at the Lifting
Tower, Wellington Place, Leeds.
Textus was installed for a period of two weeks
in October 2007 and commemorated the 800th anniversary of the
signing of Leeds’ Charter.
Seen was asked to take the existing work, a
cipher created by Coates and produce a transformative installation
in the form of a projected installation. The artwork used the
text of the charter as a material, multiplying it 800 times to
create a dense field of constantly shifting imagery. An animation
routine was created to produce an unlimited series of viewpoints
which slowly ebbed and flowed mimicing the city which the installation
represented.
Lumen Arts provided technical support for the projection system,
which consisted of two Sanyo XP-57s fitted with custom lenses.
Arup and MEPC provided logistical and technical
support to bring the artwork to fruition which included the cladding
of the Lifting Tower, a 54 ft disused industrial relic, and the
monitoring of the projection housing which was automated to project
each evening for a fortnight.
