Project:Clut
Client: Self, Collboration with Joe Gilmore.
Date: 2007
'Clut' documents a series of experiments using
an analogue and digital feedback system. The system consists of
a digital 3d model displayed on a monitor which is in turn being
captured by a video camera whose input is then textured back onto
the surface of the 3d model.
The camera input causes surface deformations in the 3d model according
to luminance. These in turn feed subsequent iterations in the
feedback loop. As the electronic loop moves with near lightspeed
the input begins to change faster than the system can respond
to it. The negative feedback signal begins to act as positive
feedback causing the output to oscillate. The resulting image
is dependent on a combination of variables such as camera and
monitor settings, light amplification, scan rate, distance, angle,
physical vibration and digital to analogue conversion. The soundtrack
was generated in realtime by converting the video image into synthesised
sound.
Clut is included in the Aurora DVD, 'Edition One' along with films
by Thorsten Fleisch, Ben Rivers, Volker Schreiner and others.
