My role on this project began as an advisory role on the best application and approach in the use of projections for this project. After our first initital meetings, and with Lumen Arts on board i took over management of the technical aspects of the projected content. The initial brief from Peter is that the text should be layered in some way. Legibility is not important. My first thoughts are to attempt to create a dense field of text with as many layers of text as can be achieved with the gfx card i have. The installation will not be a playback of a pre recorded sequence but instead will be generated live for the entire duration of the installation. This is to ensure that there is no repeat of footage and that a visitor to the site on two seperate occaisions shouldn’t see the same image repeated.

The software i will be using for this project will be vvvv . It is perfect for handling large amounts of data in an installation setting and should run constantly for a month without any hitches.

After a change of plan the projection site is now confirmed as the lifting tower, just off wellington road, Leeds.
A site visit was made between Paul, Phil and Peter. Options for projection were discussed. Due to the proportions of the building it was decided that a twin projector setup was best to retain clarity and definition of the projected image. One projector will cover the upper half of the structure whilst the other covers the bottom. Paul will custom build the software to split the image signal out to two projectors. When placed on top of each other the images will synchronise providing a full proportional projection.

After an inital correspondance via email, we finally met Peter today for a site visit at the Royal Armouries, the current planned projection site. I invited Phil Slocombe from Lumen Arts to give additonal advice on technical aspects of projection. On visiting the site, it was decided that the current plan of a moving projection was impractical and added nothing to the installation as an artwork.

Instead a revised plan was developed incorporating the three sections of the buildings entrance facade to operate as screens for a multiple projector setup. A projection line of site was accessible from the building facing the Armouries front. It was discussed what type of projection setup could be used from this vantagepoint and initial ideas were outlined for the content of the projected material. It was decided that Phil would take over the projection details of the piece, and Paul would manage the technical aspects of the video material.
